To Bathe Or Not To Bathe?


The quality of our drinking water is a major factor of our health and wellbeing, but does anyone ever wonder about the water we use to wash ourselves every day with? You would think if you just drank filtered water then you pretty much should have all bases covered, but this isn’t the case. The chlorine in ourshower and bath water could be just as damaging, if not more so. This is because our skin is our largest organ and it’s naturally gifted with the ability to absorb both nutrients and toxins. Our body absorbs more chlorine through the skin than it does when ingesting it.

Not only does taking a warm shower open up the pores of your skin allowing for accelerated absorption of chlorine and other chemicals, but it also creates the steam which we inhale. When you take a hot shower or bath, you inhale chloroform, a by-product of chlorine through the steam.  The steam we inhale while showering can contain up to 50 times the level of chemicals than tap water due to the fact that chlorine and most other contaminants vaporize much faster and at a lower temperature than water. Inhalation is a much more harmful means of exposure since the chloroform we inhale goes directly into our blood stream. Chlorine vapours are known to be a strong irritant to the sensitive tissue and bronchial passages inside our lungs; it was used as a chemical weapon in World War II.

The inhalation of chlorine is a suspected cause of asthma and bronchitis, especially in children… which has increased 300% in the last two decades. Chlorine exposure through shower or bath can be especially harmful for individuals with pre-existing conditions such as sinus conditions, allergies, skin rashes and emphysema.

Showering in chlorinated water is often irritating to the skin and scalp as chlorine destroys the natural oils and protein in our body and causes adverse effects on skin and hair.  The chlorine bonds with and destroys proteins which then makes your scalp dry, dandruff worse, and adversely affect chemically treated or tinted hair.  Chlorine-water bathing short term effects can cause both dryness and itchiness to the skin and eyes.

When we drink contaminated water the toxins are partially filtered out by our kidneys and digestive system.  But when we bathe, the combination of what your skin absorbs and your lungs inhale during a 10-minute shower is greater than the amount you would ingest drinking eight glasses of water from the same tap. We are surviving  in an increasingly toxic world, and as we get more and more man-made substances exposed to our bodies and less and less natural-made substances, wherever we can find a way to lower some toxic input into our body, then I am all for it!
